Overview
The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa is a points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member. You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, a suitable skills assessment, competent English, and be invited to apply after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.
The Subclass 189 visa rewards skilled migrants who can qualify on their own merits. Because it carries no sponsorship or regional obligations, it is one of the most flexible permanent residence pathways — but competition for invitations is high, so your points score and occupation matter a great deal.
This page summarises the current rules in plain English. Fees and processing times above are drawn from the Department of Home Affairs and shown with the date they were verified.
