Documents prepared properly for the Department of Home Affairs

Almost every visa application includes documents in a language other than English — a foreign birth certificate, a marriage certificate, an academic transcript, a police clearance. The Department of Home Affairs requires these to be accompanied by certified English translations. Translations done by an untrained family member or friend are not accepted.

LifeinAus arranges NAATI-certified translations through experienced translators, so every supporting document arrives at the Department in the correct form. Translations are done by qualified professionals on letterhead with their full certification and signature — meeting the Department's requirements onshore and offshore.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a NAATI-certified translation?

Documents submitted to the Department of Home Affairs that are not in English must be accompanied by an English translation by a NAATI-certified translator. NAATI is the national accrediting body for translators and interpreters in Australia. Translations done by friends or family or untranslated documents will not be accepted.

Which documents typically need translating?

Birth certificates, marriage and divorce certificates, academic transcripts and qualifications, police clearances and military service documents, identity documents, and any supporting evidence prepared in a language other than English.

Can my translation be done overseas?

For documents being lodged from outside Australia, a translation by an officially accredited translator in your country is generally acceptable, provided it is on letterhead and includes the translator's full name, certification and signature. Onshore applications generally require NAATI-certified translations.

How long do translations take?

Most standard documents are turned around in a few business days. Longer or specialised documents take more time. Always factor translation time into your lodgement plan.

How much do translations cost?

Translation costs vary by document type, length and language. We arrange transparent quotes upfront so there are no surprises.
